Random Thoughts -1

Just throwing in a few thoughts that run across my mind . Currently am listening to "hard Day " from George Micheal and magically it takes me to the days of school where audio cassettes were cool .
"Dont bring me down baby don't bring me down "

"Somebody give me a break somebody give me a break man "

I feel like screaming this on top of lungs outside in this freezing weather .

Just got another lesson is swimming and am not making any waves . No pun intended .
The work scene is yet another piece of shit . Not good . Something don't feel right ! Just got a chance to play some tennis after a forced hiatus of 2 months . the strokes are still there but need to work on the racket preparation and overall movement but need some goddamn decent player to play with ! Not 2.5 rated players who claim that they are 4.0 . I've been at the receiving end of both these extremes . Guys who say that 4.0 -4.5 and beating the heck outta me and guys who are pathetic in stroke making ! The self evaluation system is a whole bunch of baloney .

WISH THAT ALL I NEEDED TO DO IS PLAY TENNIS ALL DAY LONG !

Nothing more to write home about !

Ode to the garden !

Looking back at this year ( not over yet ) , it sure has been manic . Well , for starters this year has been the most we have been to the doctor's office , owing to our GI issues ! If i could sum up 2006 in 1 word , it would be GI -2006 !

I specifically want to write this blog to record the fact my trip to India in April - May was the last trip I made to visit our IPCL residence in Baroda (since my parents moved out ) ,India ! It seems very trivial at the face of it , but sure it brings to closure a plethora of memories and in fact end of a chapter in all our ( my family ) lives .

Just to provide an estimate of the passage of time spent at IPCL , its been a little more than 24 years . Its the soil that made me what I am and stand for it ! . I am extremely reminiscent of the days we spent in the DF type units . It was a spacious 3 bed house with 3 baths , a spacious kitchen and a great garden . Not to mention th fact the we had the luxury of a servant maid who provided most of the kitchen help .

The memories , brings to life days of the 90s . I can vividly recall the boom of cable TV . Me and my friends , clamoring the cable installers and pestering them with queries about our installation . It finally came one find day on our EC color TV with 32 channels . It opened a whole new chapter in my life ,starting with the an introduction to something called as MTV , CNN and the Star network . Finally we could bid adieu to Doordarshan's unexciting programming line-up . It sure was exciting !

I can clearly remember studying for the 10th std board exams , overhearing Whitney Houston exercising her vocal chords from the soundtrack of Bodyguard . I usually used to study in the ambiance of the garden that we had . It was amazing . I have never focussed better anywhere else as I have in my garden . I humbly offer my ode to the trees and the shrubs surrounding that garden. I am truly indebted to you guys . The ambiance that this garden provided , cannot be valued . Not to mention the fact that it was a natural playground for the cats that used to frequent our house. !

Amidst the serenity of this garden I have studied topics ranging from Std X Civics to Communication Theory in Electrical Engineering . The garden still stands , bearing testimony to my life ! we had an amazing rose tree that bore pink roses . There was also a guava tree that had stopped producing any fruit , since the time we started using RIN (detergent ) for washing our clothes , as the water would be routed to the section of the garden where this tree stood .

Finally its the soil that sent me to America to pursue my dreams , where I met my soul mate ! I owe a lot to that soil ! It was the place that I used to seek refuge in times of distress . It has also served as a dining room on certain occasions ! Its also come close to serving as a changing room , providing great camouflage ! . Its served as safe vault providing me support for hiding certain things !

The best part is that it provided a means to test my cricket skills , practice my pace bowling and hone whatever cricket skills i might have !
Even when I was in India , I was not so sentimental about this garden , but slowly reminiscing about IPCL , it hits you that its the garden that has been the ally .
In life we take things for granted . I would have done great disservice to the word "gratitude" by not acknowledging the role of the garden in making me , who I am .

I aint writing no stupid blog

Suddenly of-late I ve got this lethargy to not blog. My brain constantly questions the purposefulness of this act . Its like that ad on TV where the guy tells his wife that he is gonna blog about some cheesecake shake at Sonic so that his readers could benefit . It so happens that the only reader is his mom . Its kinda like that . Sometimes I feel that I blog for myself rather any one else . But if there is an audience, its encouraging .

My tennis isnt making too many waves . Mike ,my partner is pounding me left righ and center . Given my lack of mobility , lack of fitness , looks like anyone could defeat me easily . I have frankly stopped worrying too much about it . Its that idiotic season shift , where tennis isnt the focus suddenly and work takes precedence .

Fulfillement ! Its a big thing for me . I have been going round in circles trying to grasp the subtleness of this word . Things like music , tennis , having a good time . I have been reminscing about my school days . Small group of friends , do ur homework , play , eat , see DD television and sleep to start another day . Life was simple, un-complicated , straight cut .

Bills to pay , gas to fill , food to cook , manage the work front , put up with co-workers ( dog eat dog's ass world ) , laundry , mail , et al . Simple is far away .

Things apart, made some amazing eggplant Lasagne today . Slowly getting better at it but not too healthy . I am running out of options to cook as rice doesnt suite us .

Got a chance to see some Sa Re Ga Ma pa on Z tv . Ooodi Baba , the fight between Bappy Dada and Abhijeet was entertaining that but its sad that it happened on a kid show . Its so freaking melodramatic . Everyone builds that unneccesary sense of competition amongst kids , asking them ( putting them on the spot ) , as to who would lose . Whatever happenned to doing ur job and not worrying about others fate . Its the same freaking attitude . Beta tumhare dost Rahul ko "maths" mein kitne marks mile ? Now if rahul gets lesser marks everything seems to be forgotten . These are the values that the middle class is inculcating . Beta tumhare notes share mat karo . Add to it, Abhijeet's gesture to provoke Bappi Da on the stage . Thanks to Bappy Dada's composure and some sanity was brought in .

Ok i heard Alka Yagnik tell some contestant about using the correct scale for a song . I would urge her to go and listen to a song named " Saawariya " in the album Swades . We will know what the right octave is .

Remembered a joke about the word "Saawariya " . This word probably refers to something romantic in hindi . But the word in Tamil means " are u dying ?" . Incidentally this is a joke that happenned amongst a group of thambis who saw this hindi movie . Now after this song , some old man dies . One of the guys in the group asks aloud as to why the old man died. To this a brilliant reply came - Just now she was singing "Saawariya " thats why . Ha ha ha ! . Idu epadi irruku ? Apadi podu !

I have been debating , buying an XBOX ! Frankly do i need one ? If I need XBOX or XBOX 360 . If XBOX 360 . If XBOX 360 , core model or the whole Shebang? Which games do i buy ?
Where do i buy the second controller ? Should i buy XBOX live ? if yes do i need wireless hardware ?

should i start small with the XBOX from ebay and then graduate to XBOX 720 that MS provides next year or in the near future ? Will it be compatible with my analog tv or do i need HDTV . If HDTV , what size , LCD OR Flat Panel . Will my house owner allow me to fix stuff needed to accomodate the TV ? with a HDTV dont i need a premium Home Theatre system ? 5.1 ? 7.1? 100.1 ? Bose yamaha Sony pioneer philips ? DVD player ? Blue ray support ?

KISS ( Keep it simple Stupid ) , work more and you would'nt need to think about the XBOX ! Good solution !

Its getting late . Gotta crash . Have another pounding session with Mike ! Need some extra fulfillment !

Mid August

The highlight for the most part has been the tennis season . Lot of tennis activity going on . We decide to go to Cincinnati for the Western and Southern Financial Group Tennis Championship . We fly to Columbus Ohio ( where my aunt and he family lives) and drive from Columbus to Cincy as they call it .

Luckily I am able to take half a day and we fly from Midway airport . We decide to take an earlier flight . I pick up a rental car at Columbus ( Chevy Malibu Max) . We meet my aunt and her family . Her son is also planning to travel with us to Cincy .

Its , almost a 2 Hour drive . This location is called King's Island is supposed to be an amusement . They have a big tennis center .

We enter 30 mins prior to start of play and we are treated to a lot of tennis

First of all I am able to spot Max Mirnyi ("The beast ") and Jonas Bjorkman practise . The beast is truly a beast . He almost looks like a Vulcan !
The first match is the semi-final between Juan Carlos Ferrero and Tommy Robredo , the spaniards . In between the match , we get a glimpse of Fernando Gonzalez practice and we learn that he hits the ball with significant power . His coach steps about 4 feet inside the court and serves across the T , to simulate Roddick's power (who he is slated to meet in the evening in the semi's ).

Finally Juan Carlos prevails . We head out , not caring much about the Doubles match between the Bryan brothers against Andy Ram + partner .

In between I spot Mark woodforde , who gives me a Hi.

we head out to the central area where Juan Carlos Ferror speaks to Chris Fowler , Patrick Mcenroe and Pam Shriver ( who cant bear the heat) in the makeshift outdoor ESPN booth .

The rest of the afternoon is spent in checking out the stalls . Interestingly I am treated to some fierce tennis between Dominic Hrbaty and Michael Youzhny who are practising playing a set . Youzhny is amazing and its evident in his current US open run . I really get an extremely close look of Youzhny .Check out my pic with Patrick mcenroe

The evening session begins when I get to see Leander Paes practise with his partner Martin Damm . Leander is quick and agile but lacks a fast serve . I guess thats his bane . I am not sure his serve has any kick either . I get a chance to speak to Leander when he is nearby and wish him luck .

Slowly the crowd gathers to witness the duel between Fernando Gonzalez and Andy Roddick for some semi-final action . Roddick ploughs through games and wins easily . The next match is the doubles semifinals between leander-Damm v/s myrni - Bjorkman . We are lucky to be seated in the first row , right behind where Leander was serving . It was fun to watch .

Tennis was the higlight of this trip . its an ardous journey back home . Back to work .Past weeks have been moderate , barring a hard drive crash . Things have been ok . Until then adios .

The Birthday weekend

The last letters I penned last week were , " I hope that the next week isnt crazy " . It turned out to be true , but alas , the "weekend was bad " .

The week did not start on a bright note. Soon after i finished blogging that sunday night , I experienced severe ear pain . I decided not to go to work on Monday . Luckily , saw the doctor who diagnosed it as middle ear infection . She prescribed "amoxycillin " and ear drops . Even before I had taken a dose of the medication , the placebo effect took effect and I was busy driving to Schaumburg to get to Kaushik's place . I meandered on my way to go to Subaru of schaumburg to inquire about the vehicle title and also went to Elgin to check out an Ipod interface. All wasteful activities . I finally managed to meet Kaushik's parents around 3:00 , who thankfully were able to provide some great home food . By the time i returned home around 4:00 pm , i missed the plumber .

I managed to cook something that nite . Also i managed to hit a few balls with a guy named Mike who places great tennis .On the office front , one of my colleagues sent out a mass email , explaining how they needed to update their calendar if they were taking the day off and not put others into incovenience . Big deal i thought to myself .

The rest of the week was ok , I had a few issues from France , and had to get a critical code change integrated .

Friday was my birthday . I wore the shirt that Arthi bought for me . After lunch my friday was not a happy day anymore . Right after lunch , my boss asks me to look into yet another issue . Also our releases are blocked due to an issue. We start troubleshooting the issue around 4:00 pm and this quest for the root cause , extends well past 7:45 . Most of the day is gone . Wasted on a quandry issue. The day which was exclusive to me was frittered away is some obscure issue . The only saving grace came from my colleague who had placed a pack of chocolates at my desk . I effusively thanked him and am still surpised as he was the only guy who gifted me anything that day . I must reciprocate this act of his .

Kaushik's mom had invited us for Dinner that nite . Arthi was back home with an attack of fever and we also invite Bala .

We all meet around 8:30 at our place . Bala drives to Schaumburg . Its a great dinner . All this summer we have eaten a lot at their place. I hope that we get a chance to return the favor . we talk for a while and around 10:30 pm we decide to return home . Bala stops for a while at our place and we had some small discussions , that included some funky weird code discussions too ! End of Friday . 29 years and counting . My Birthday has ended without a whimper !

Some days are meant to be days where you personal preferences are forced out of the way . Saturday was one such day . I got up early expecting the plumber to show up . we have a bath tub that doesnt drain too well . The plumber comes , inspects it and finds that it works ok . he runs the snake and confirms the same . Arthi isn't doing too well , with her fever . I go to play some tennis and get a chance to hit with Drew. The session is good . All of the morning I have been logging into the office network to check on the issue that two of my colleagues were troubleshooting . I managed to gather the courage to ask them as to whether they were able to troubleshoot the issue . I guess , I managed to piss em off rather than help them . I really wanted to help , so was constantly in touch with the engineers all afternoon . Finally they found a possible cause . Due to this change m they needed a new build. I agreed to build . I was eager to help and this was a chance i didnt want to miss . All of the build process continued until 7:30 .

I decided to play some tennis . Guess what , amidst the bunch of people who are having a tennis gala ( ignoring the rules of the courts and not being senstive to people waiting outside ), I spot Drew who obliges for yet another session .This one is better . I am able to focus on specifics such as cross court angles and being in the rally . It all ends at 9:15 after which i had "zero" energy to do anything else . I watch some TV and was back to some browsing . I stumble upon some Indian Railway videos , especially of the Rajdhanis and Shatabdis . I am engrossed in that until 1:00 am after which I hit the sack . I get up around 10:00 am , go to DOMINICS the first thing in the morning to get some milk and raisin bread as my stomach isnt doing too well.

Kaushik's parents are leaving today . We go to Schaumburg , and help them go to the airport . While at Schaumburg , i manage to pick up an overgrip and a replacement grip for my prince OG .

return home and find someone I know hitting at the courts . I get ready and come . Its sad as I have to hit with one of these girls i see . All they know is brute power . Seems that they dont realize the nuances of the game in terms of angles , stroke mechanics , match play etc . All they do is hit from one end to the other , with all the brute force they have ( not to mention their ooooooooooooooooooooooooversize rackets ) . The girl does' nt even know who to properly feed the ball during a rally . I was pissed . wanted to blast out at em but managed to keep my trap shut and walk back home .

We decided to attend a concert by Anoushka Shankar at Millenium park . we decide to drive . While riding , we encounter a lot of congestion towards downtown . We manage to get some UG parking near MP .

We manage to get some good seats and boy , isnt MP wonderful ? Karsh Kale is in the house , spinning some tracks . Initially it was tough to recognize him without his goatee and long hair , but with the due progression of time it was certain that KK it was ! This was confirmed , once he started playing tracks from "Broken english" his latest album .

KK was amazing , engrossed in his world of mix n match .

Soon it was the time for the maestro , Anoushka Shankar to arrive . The ensemble was composed of Tabla ( Tanmoy Bose ) , Flute , mridangam , Flemenco piano , bass guitar and Laptop ( speciale electronic sounds ) . Unfortunately my man Karsh Kale didnt play with Anoushka . I was hoping that KK , being a tabla virtuoso , pitch in too . The concert was a beautiful blend of fusion , with classical Hindustani music . the Percussion was the "works " with both Tanmay Bose and the mridangam player supplementing each other .

It's a scintillating performance and we slowly leave MP . It's a quick ride back home . Nice weekend but have the grudge that my B'day and Saturday were wasted .
Finally , I dont have the guilt that I didnt pitch in when couple of my colleagues were slugging it out . Thats the only consolation this weekend . Hopefully , my ear gets back into shape . I am looking forward to the coming weekend ( I only look forward for weekends and not weekdays ) . I am travelling to Columbus and Cincinnati for the tennis open . Hopefully i can take half of Friday off . Hope that nothing comes along to disrupt yet another beautiful summer weekend !

Adios .
